From the beginning, God has reached out to his creation, to humans, wanting to be in relationship with us. It has not been easy, because the relationship is based on love, which absolutely requires free will. God wants us to engage with God in Kingdom work, but God wants us to do this eagerly, out of love. In the Bible, God's covenant almost always was made with those on the margins. Noah fits that description well. He and his family did not fit in with the violent and God-less culture in which they lived. The story of Noah's ark, found in Genesis 6-9 is a story of a God who was grieved deeply over the sinful nature of humans, who loves deeply, and who sincerely regretted destroying the world. As a result, God made a one-sided covenant. Expecting nothing in return, God promised to never destroy the earth again, and then God signed that covenant with a rainbow. This passionate and loving God continues to love us today.
