"How to Greet Every Situation with Contentment"

Philippians 4:1-9 (Summer Series 8 )-Rev. Mark C. Wagner Intro: As Paul begins the fourth chapter his "mixed metaphor" confuses us. Are we to run the race or stand firm? Thinking this through we have a marvelous manifestation of how our Christian faith remains true to life. Joy can escape us in a breath if we let problems push us around.

1. Problems of Personality cannot separate us. (vs. 1-5)

1. Agree "in the Lord." Find the common ground.
2. Rejoice "in the Lord." Let his gentleness rule.

App: In every case of difficulty we are faced with this situation: I can't. But He can, therefore, I can. As I take grip on the fact that the Lord in me is able to do what I myself cannot do, then I can do it.

2. Problems of Pressure cannot paralyze us. (vs. 6-7)

1. Modern life appears NOT to have relieved us: we're all stressed out!
2. You may not be able to control your worry, but HE CAN!
3. Continual, thankful prayer keeps us connected to his wisdom (providence).

App: In every challenge know that you can ask for and receive his grace, strength, insight, patience, love, compassion and truth. This brings us the peace that surpasses our normal, human understanding.

3. Problems of Perspective cannot decimate us. (vs. 8-9)

1. Note how often our imagination sets our attitude in the wrong direction.
2. We can and must learn to listen before we react.

Conclusion: Christianity was designed for life. Jesus didn't talk to people about religion. He talked to them about life and how to handle the continual agitation. Don't just think positively. Think rightly about how his life and love guard your inner being from doubt.

" And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
