On October 25, Jazminn Hintz and Derek Cornet of the University of Regina School of Journalism were guest hosts on Human Rights Radio and spoke with U of R Sessional Instructor, Joseph Mburu, about the plight of Nigerian students, Ihuoma Amadi and Victoria Ordu. The two students did not realize they could not work off-campus without a work permit but stopped working immediately when they realized their mistake. The two have been studying in Regina for three years and have just about completed their degrees. The Canadian government shows no inclination to be understanding and/or compassionate on this matter and are intent on deporting the two students. Our program today explains how devastating this would be for these girls as well as extremely counter-productive for the goal of improving the level of education for girls in developing countries. The amount of time they worked illegally is very small for such a harsh punishment.
