Not all fear is bad. Some fear serves to protect us. But some fear is evil and leads humans to hate and harm others. It can paralyze and keep us from following Jesus into the unknown. In Luke 13:31-35 Jesus had to face his fears. Jesus and the Pharisees seemed to be getting along, at least enough that the Pharisees tried to warn Jesus to avoid their common enemy, Herod. Pastor Phil Kniss said he pictured Jesus having a twinkle in his eyes as he told the Pharisees he was too busy to be afraid of Herod. Pastor Phil went on to say that Jesus' divinity did not negate his humanity. It did not immunize Jesus from feeling fear, but Jesus was so focused on who he was and what his calling was that he found the strength to carry on. Can our focus on our identity and mission in Jesus Christ carry us through our fears? Can we face our fears and proceed with our missional activity despite those fears?
