“Jesus Gathers His Disciples” John 1:35-51 (Eastside Baptist/Sunday AM April 14, 2013)
The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"

When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
John 1:38
Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means "Teacher"), "where are you staying?"

When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
John 1:38
Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means "Teacher"), "where are you staying?"
John 1:39
"Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
John 1:40
Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
John 1:41
The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ).
John 1:42
And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter).
John 1:43-44
The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me." Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
John 1:45
Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
John 1:46
"Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip.
John 1:47
When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit."
John 1:48
"How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."
John 1:49
Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel."
John 1:50
Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that."
John 1:51
He then added, "Very truly I tell you, you will see 'heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on' the Son of Man."
Main Idea:
The mission of every follower of Jesus is to lead other people to Jesus Christ.
Matthew 28:18
Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Matthew 28:19
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Matthew 28:20
and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
- Why should we be leading people to Jesus?
Because Jesus is the Son of God.
John 1:48
"How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."
John 1:49
Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel."
Because Jesus is the Savior of the World.

Because Jesus is the only one worthy of our awe and wonder.

Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that."
John 1:51
He then added, "Very truly I tell you, you will see 'heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on' the Son of Man."
- What does the mission of leading people to Jesus involve?
It involves leaving the good for the best.
John 1:35-36

When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
It means reorienting our lives around Jesus and his mission.
John 1:42
And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter).
It means having a real picture of our own UNimportance (vv. 35–36).
It means unselfishly viewing every relationship through Gospel lenses.
John 1:40

It involves joining together with others in a purpose larger than ourselves.

Main Idea:
The mission of every follower of Jesus is to lead other people to Jesus Christ…
because as the Son of God and Savior of the World, he is the only one worthy of our awe and wonder.
