On Friday July 5, Human Rights Radio spoke with Mellissa Northe, Inclusion Coordinator with the Prairie Region of Transport Action Canada. Mellissa is a long-time activist for the rights of persons with disabilities with regard to public transportation in the City of Regina. We discussed what is available to people with disabilities when they need to be transported from one location to another in the city. Some of the facts brought up in discussion were the system's requirement to book Paratransit one week in advance with the alternative being low floor/kneeling buses (not always available) or the accessible-for-hire (taxi) which can be double the cost of a regular taxi. These concerns and needs were the subject of a report from the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission, "Public Transportation in the City of Regina". We also discussed how the Commission is functioning since the abolishment of the Human Rights Tribunal.
