Discerning God’s purposes in extraordinary times

What was Jesus thinking when, in Luke 12:49-56, he said, “How I wish the earth were already on fire!”? Lawrence Yoder explored this passage in the context of Jesus’ road to the cross. He said this was an extraordinary time in Israel’s history, with many different factions within the Jewish people. Jesus could read the times and spoke into them, but the Jewish leaders and people could not hear. Today we are also facing extraordinary times. We also need to hear God’s words through Jeremiah 23:23-29, that God is everywhere and we cannot absent ourselves from God. Jesus invites us to watch to see what God is saying and doing in our time.
