God gave children of Israel the land He selected not because they were better than the people in the land but because of His promises to Abraham: I will give you land; I will make you a great people; I will bless the world through you.

They were to be a Theocracy.

The present inhabitants had been given 400 years to change their ways, but they got worse. Ritual Prostitution, Child sacrifice, Bestiality, Incest.

Israel was to be holy, as God is holy. Leviticus identified how they were to live. Deut 9: 4,5, 20: 18. Israel could lose God's protection because of their sins. (History bears this out: 612BC, Babylon's 70 years of captivity: 536BC, Even when they returned, they were spread out by Romans, 70AD, returning 1948AD but still not holy)  

God wants us to be holy. He will help us to be holy. He will protect us. He will help us get rid of sin in our lives, daily.
