Humanist Marriage

I have been asked to comment on how a Humanist approaches marriage.

I am happily married so I suppose I am as good an expert on happy humanist marriages as anybody else.

So here goes.

To me, marriage is both a social contract and a legal contract.

It’s an agreement between the two of us to share finances and to partner together to tackle this thing called life. 

Having someone I trust to be there to pick up my slack when I falter is great!

And, this social contract called marriage has other “benefits” too. 

We aren’t just economic partners; we get to have sex together too!

I can also sue him if he has sex with anyone else.

Not too many legal contracts have that sort of make or break clause in them. 

Marriage isn’t a sacred institution,  but it’s still pretty awesome. . 

I love being married to my husband.

He makes my life easier and happier. 

That’s what marriage is.
