Right now Writing in Stereo creator Doug Potter is wrapping up a five-session course on recording and editing features with participants at OASIS. This organization specializes in classes for growth aimed at seniors and others here in the Tucson community.
Potter is teaching participants to use digital still cameras and the devices' video recording capability to record sound. His students switch the camera's function selector to video and then point the camera's microphone toward the subject of their interview or ambient sound recording. Audacity, a free digital audio editing and mixing application, (with some tweaking) recognizes the resulting file as audio and imports it for editing.
So the need for expensive and complicated microphones and other sound recording equipment is no obstacle for those who want to get some fairly sophisticated mixes in the can and on the Internet.
A second OASIS session begins November 9th. During that five-week stretch, participants will work on longer feature projects of their own.
