God has pursued humans since the beginning, since His walk through the Garden of Eden calling, "Adam, where are you?" Pastor Phil Kniss points out that this is not a one-sided pursuit, that we also should pursue God. The Magi referenced in Matthew 2:1-12 were not content to just gaze at stars looking for signs of what God was up to. When they saw a sign, they had to get involved.
Unfortunately, in our society we are not too likely to watch for, and get involved in, what God is doing. Pastor Phil suggested that our consumer culture is a huge barrier to getting involved in God's mission. We are so conditioned to thinking that life is about us and our needs that we think our religious experience needs to satisfy us. But our calling is to share in God's work in the world. The symb9ol of Christian faith is the cross, and this is a symbol that reminds us of the call to lay down ourselves and to participate in something bigger than us. Can we see the signs and are we willing to set aside our own needs to get involved in what God is doing? Watch for the star rising, and follow it, just as the Magi did.
