According to the Federal Reserve, outstanding student loan debt for American borrowers reached 1.7 trillion dollars as of March 2021. Doubling its previous balance in just a decade. Student loan debt is the now the second largest outstanding debt Americans hold passing auto loan debt and second only to mortgage loan debt. How did we get here and what are the underlying problems causing this figure to balloon so rapidly? What possible outcomes may come from the current administration as they look to address this issue.
