Gladys Bentley, an American blues singer, pianist, and entertainer, shone during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. An African American cross-dressing, bawdy performer, she drew crowds in New York speakeasies, singing her own “raunchy” lyrics to popular songs of the era.
