US sharemarkets ended higher on Wednesday. Shares of Boeing fell by 1.1%, weighing on the Dow Jones index. But the Treasury Secretary noted continued progress on trade talks with China. The Dow Jones index rose by almost 7 points or less than 0.1%. The S&P500 index rose by 0.4%. And the Nasdaq index rose by 55 points or 0.7%
European sharemarkets were generally firmer on Wednesday. The European Central Bank left borrowing costs unchanged as expected. But President Mario Draghi's comments shed very little light on reported plans for a tiered deposit rate and a new round of ultra-cheap bank loans. The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose by 0.3%. The German Dax rose by 0.5% but the UK FTSE was lower by 0.1%. And in London trade, shares of Rio Tinto rose by 1.0% while BHP lifted by 0.2%.
