US blue chip shares rose modestly on Thursday. Shares in Bank of America rose by 2.5% with shares in Wells Fargo down 0.5% after the banks issued their latest quarterly earnings data. Airline stocks rose in response to earnings figures for Delta Airlines and a lower oil price. The Dow Jones ended higher by 18 points or 0.1% after being up 54 points at one stage and being down 23 points in early trade. The S&P 500 index rose by less than 0.1% while the Nasdaq fell 1 points or 1.6%.
