This story will break up nicely our Royal City focus this week, first as we mark the passing of another political year in Guelph, and then we'll have a conversation with one of the councillors that represents Open Sources HQ on the University of Guelph campus.
This Thursday, December 8, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss:
1) I Love That Word “Re-view”. Depending on how things go on Wednesday night, by the time we go live to air on Thursday, the City of Guelph should have a 2017 budget. If council does manage to settle it all in a day, it will be a fairly straightforward affair despite the early warnings back in September that this was going to be one of the most contentious and difficult budget processes in years. We’ll wrap up the budget talk, and see what we can make of other recent matters before council like the change in transit management, the approval of a four-storey development at 75 Dublin St. N., and a certain lawsuit against a certain local blogger who’s not Guelph Politico.
2) Rebel or High Water. Last weekend, Ezra Levant and the gang at the Rebel held a rally against carbon taxes at the Alberta legislature when things got ugly... er. As Conservative leadership candidate Chris Alexander spoke, the crowd started chanting "Lock her up!" The her, in this case, meaning Rachel Notley; the reason she should be locked up is ambiguous at best. Still, those gathered must have thought they were rather clever for doing an homage to a frequent repose of ralliers for Donald Trump south of the border, but mostly everyone else was disgusted by the inference, and that includes many Conservative politicians. But what are we to make of this development? Is Chris Alexander politically done? We'll consider the implications.
3) Yuletide Piper. As stated above, if everything goes according to plan, the City of Guelph have a new budget on Thursday morning. If it doesn't, then Leanne Piper's going to have a lot on her mind when she comes in to CFRU Thursday afternoon. The Ward 5 Councillor will join us as the latest of Guelph's City Councillors to come into the studio for a chat. We'll discuss all things monetary at city hall, as well as recent developments, upcoming issues, and what Guelphites might be able to expect in the new year from their local government, plus we'll also discuss Piper's recent travels, her leaving the police board, and being on the look out for Ward 5 heroes. And if you have any of your questions for Piper, let us know and we'll ask those too.
