Morning Report 17 Jan 20: More records tumble on Wall St

US sharemarkets were firmer on Thursday. Shares in Morgan Stanley rose 8% after reporting a 46% lift in quarterly profits, well ahead of estimates. Economic data generally met or beat expectations. And the US-China Phase 1 trade deal boosted investor sentiment. With an hour of trade to go the Dow Jones index was up by 175 points or 0.6%. The S&P500 index rose by 0.6% above 3300 points and the Nasdaq index lifted by 68 points or 0.7%.
