Psalm 86-90, 2 Samuel 1-2
Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
This was Psalm 90:12
I’ve spoken at so many funerals over the years. Each time, people are left with a sentiment that says, I wish we just had more time. …. .
But I’ve also been with families of several people who have affirmed - they just lived every day to the full.
There is something different when you are with someone who has a view of eternity in their mind. They know that life if fragile and there every day matters. To this type of person, they aren’t easily frustrated by others or by their situation. They don’t hold grudges and they know what this life is really all about. When you are around this type of person, the atmosphere just feels different. It’s warm and friendly. It feels really good to be around them.
The truth is, we can often forget that this life is fleeting and that every moment matters. And when we do this, we take ourselves too seriously, and let things bother us.
So Moses makes this his prayer.. Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
He wants God to help him remember the frailty of his mortal person. And he asks for the reminder, not to be a morbid person. . . But to learn to have a heart of wisdom.
Notice that he isn’t asking God to make him a wise person. . . He is asking for a heart of wisdom. The heart is what leads us, drives us, and has us make decisions. Moses wants the piece of him that has this much influence, to be filled with wisdom! For if he can move his heart this way, his decisions and actions will follow.
Maybe if we had more of a heart of wisdom, we would move past some of our frustrations and hurts. WE would realize that life is too short to fight and argue. . . Maybe then, we would have a better view of eternity and what this life is all about.
So, may you remember the frailty of life. May it drive you to live out your days with purpose. May you live your best every single day, and may it come from a heart of wisdom!
