In the 13th century, the Mamluks established a dynasty in Egypt. Warriors of renown, they defeated Mongols and Crusaders. They also amassed great wealth through the collection of taxes. Yet the mighty Mamluks could not survive a war with the Ottoman Empire in the early 16th century. They had grown accustomed to their wealth, and they lost their initial warrior spirit.
