Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory
Text: James 1: 1-4
Thesis: We can experience “pure joy” in our trials if the Glory of God is on us!
- “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you experience trials of many kinds”, because it will ensure that we do not become stagnant in our Spiritual growth.
- The expectation level is enormous from a human standpoint. It would be more than enough to expect us to be joyful in troubles but “Pure” joy? “Consider it pure joy” (2a)
- This type of expectation can only be met by the power of God.
Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
- Stephen experienced pure joy at his execution because the glory of God was upon him.
“He looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God…Lord do not hold this sin against them.” (Read Acts 7:54-60)
- James’ wording makes it clear that as Christians we will have trials in this life. It is inevitable!
“My brothers, whenever,”
Jesus said, "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
- Trials will keep us alive in Christ! If we are not growing, we are dying and will become stagnant in our Faith.
- Jesus wants us to experience the Living Water and not become stagnant water.
Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:13-14)
- James has in mind the type of “trials” (2b) that an Athlete might experience to make them stronger.
- The purpose of trials is not to defeat us but to make us stronger.
“Because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (vs3)
- The big questions are, do we truly know this, and does it matter?
- Jesus “for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
- Jesus is our perfect example!
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[a] And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.” (Luke 23:34)
