AM Report 22 Jan 18: US shutdown in play - still expect gains on the Aussie market

US sharemarkets rose on Friday despite fears of a US government shutdown. The US shutdown did occur over the weekend.  Overall 9 of the 11 S&P sectors posted gains. But shares in American Express fell 1.8% after posting its first quarterly loss in 26 years. Shares in IBM fell 4% on disappointment on its earnings result Some US government functions will be forced to shut down after failure of Congress to pass a new funding deal.
