European sharemarkets finished October strongly with shares up on Wednesday following robust quarterly earnings results from cosmetics company L'Oréal (+6.7%), pharmaceutical giant Sanofi (+6.7%) and banks Standard Chartered (+3.1%) and Santander (+2.9%). The pan-European STOXX600 index rose 1.7%. The German Dax rose by 1.4% and the UK FTSE index gained 1.3%. In London trade, shares of Rio Tinto rose by 2.6% and BHP lifted by 2.2%.
