Its winds reached 160 mph as it barreled through the southeastern Caribbean. This strength shattered the previous record by more than 2 weeks. Hurricane Emily achieved Category 5 status on July 17, 2005. Beryl made landfall on Grenada's Carriacau Island as a Category 4 storm, causing widespread damage with 150 mph winds.
