The National Debt

Which comes first, national default or nuclear war?  Or will they use the latter to "fix" the former?

Why does the US borrow money, at interest, to run the government?  Why doesn't it just issue money without paying interest?  I don't really answer this question, I just bring up the absurdity of our predicament.
