For Sam Melnick, a Police Reporter for the United Press operating out of the Kansas City Bureau, it has been a long, dull day. It is now time for dinner, and there is one place he always goes. It's the best meal in Kansas City, so he gets on the phone to make a reservation. She picks up the phone and says "Hello?" Sam says "Hello, Ma, it's Sam". She asks "What time will you be home for dinner?" Sam says "About an hour. What's for dinner?" She says "Pot roast, with potato pancakes and applesauce". Sam says "Tell me more. What's for dessert?" She says "Your favorite". Sam says "You don't mean lemon meringue pie!" She says "I do, and now son, you'll have to excuse me. I've got to get back to the kitchen. I'll expect you in an hour". Sam says "Oh Mom, wait a minute. I've changed my mind. Better make that, a half hour". On his way home, Sam stops in at Frank's Bar, just for a quick one. Sam arrives at his mother's house a little after dinner time. His mother asks him "Sam, where have you been?" Sam says "On the way home, I stopped at Frank's place". She says "Oh, I wondered what happened to you. Well, I've got everything all ready. You better get washed up and ...." Just then, the phone rings. His mother says "Oh no. Sam don't answer it". Sam says "I'd better, Mom". She says "It's probably that night manager down at the bureau again. And if that man thinks he's going to take you away from my dinner again, just because of a story...." Sam says "Forget it, Ma, It's been a dull day. I'll just brush him off and sit down to dinner". Sam answers the phone and talks to the night manager for a few minutes. He suddenly hangs up the phone and says "Mom, I've got to rush". She asks "What about my pot roast and pancakes?" Sam says "Keep it warm, Mom, I'll be back as soon as I can. A big story is breaking". She asks "What big story?" Sam says "A father just murdered his daughter".
