Market Close 1 August 19: Local shares extend losses for a second session

It has been a softer start to the new month with the ASX 200 extending losses for a second day. The benchmark index fell 24pts or 0.35% to 6789 as materials weighed heavily on the broader market. Gold miners were among the main laggards while Rio Tinto fell ahead of its first half earnings results.
