Efter officersutbildningen i USA 1944 skickas Lt Bob Dole till Italien som ersättare för en stupad i plutonchef i 10th Mountain Division. Där får han stifta bekantskap med den rutinerade sergeanten Carafa som lett plutonen sen den ordinarie plutonchefen stupade.
