The First Revelation of Glory
Text: John 2:1-11
Thesis: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,
the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14
1. Jesus and his disciples go to a Wedding Feast.
A. In Jewish culture, a wedding celebration could last for several days!
B. The wine unexpectedly runs out. This is a disaster for the families
involved.
* “When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more Wine.”
John 2:3
* “And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.”
John 2:3 KJV
“This amounted to a social catastrophe for the families of the bride and groom. There is a Jewish saying “Without wine there is no joy,” and this would be particularly true at a festive occasion such as a
wedding.” Beacon Bible Commentary
2. Jesus is put on the spot by his mother.
* “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
John 2:4
* “And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they
will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you
need before you ask him.”
Matthew 6:7-8
A. Jesus knew exactly what was needed for this wedding party.
3. A mother knows best!
* “His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
John 2:5
A. Mary had faith in her son.
* “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Hebrews 11:1
B. We can trust Jesus to be present in the happenings of our everyday lives.
4. Jesus delivers the best of the best, using stone jars and water.
A. Stone Jars are used to clean hands and feet: See Leviticus Chapters 11-16
B. Out of the stone jars comes the best wine at the party!
C. Jesus transforms ordinary things into great things!
* “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s
will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
