Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

When we see something bad happen, especially to good people, we ask God where He was, why He didn’t stop it, why He allowed it?  Sometimes we get mad at God.  What was He thinking?  How could this happen if He is such a beneficent and powerful God?  Why would God let people be born with defects? Or let illness take over?
