Should you ever offer to work for free to convince a company to evaluate your skills?

A user asked my opinion about whether offering to work for free is a good incentive for getting a company to evaluate my skill. Some companies will take advantage of this and then not hire you. Some companies can't allow people to work for free. My advice: know what your skills are worth, and get paid for your efforts.
