Section 1

The text draws out a central truth: sometimes the most godly response to another’s suffering is not to “solve” their problem but to share in their burden. Elkanah could not give Hannah children—only God grants life—but he could give compassion. Paul’s exhortation to the Philippians to “open your heart” and the reminder from 2 Corinthians 1 that God is the “God of comfort” anchor this truth in Scripture. In practical terms, it means being willing to cry with others, rejoice with them, and carry their burdens. This simple yet profound way of living not only blesses others but also honors God’s character through us.
