The book of Jonah not only shows us the amazing compassion and mercy of God's heart, but it also reveals what our hearts are like: rebellious. Jonah is desperately trying to flee from the presence of God, and God gives him a taste of what that's like. For three days and three nights, Jonah sits in the stomach of a fish, slowly disintegrating in absolute darkness. And then he realizes, "What am I a doing?!" He stops running and turns toward God. And God meets him right there. With mercy.
