If you were to consider only the circumstances described in Philippians chapters 1 and 2, you would never summarize them as "joyful." That is, until you add "the Lord." Our responsibility is to "rejoice in the Lord." The Lord is provides the reason, motivation, context, and sphere for rejoicing. All that's left to do is simply to decide to do it!
