There’s a difference between feeling, processing, and learning from our emotions and thoughts AND getting trapped in them. 
 
I invite you to try this when you feel triggered and are experiencing an uncomfortable emotion:
 
Write down your thoughts on paper to gain some distance and awareness.
 
Describe WHERE you feel the sensations of the emotion in your body:
 
head? 
temples?
neck?
shoulders?
back?
chest?

- Write down your thoughts on paper to gain some distance and awareness.
 
- Describe WHERE you feel the sensations of the emotion in your body:
 
- head? 
- temples?
- neck?
- shoulders?
- back?
- chest?
- gut?
- hands/feets?
- arms/legs?
 
- Describe the sensations of the emotion:
 
- tight or open?
- constricted or expansive?
- heavy or light?
- hot or cold?
- color?
- speed of sensation?
 
- After you FEEL the emotion all the way through, get curious about what you were THINKING that created the emotion. 
 
- Once you’ve felt the emotion, and have learned from it, ask yourself:
 
- Does it serve me to keep feeling this way?
- Does it serve me to keep thinking the thoughts that are causing this emotion?
 
- Decide ON PURPOSE what you want to feel:
 
- satisfied or fulfilled?
- delighted or surprised?
- peaceful or calm?
- successful or accomplished?
 
- Finally, tell your brain what you want it to focus on:
 
- “I’m looking for evidence of being safe, getting help, being included, being acknowledged, etc.”
- “I’m looking for examples of all things being figureoutable.”
