Kelly Anne Bates was only 14 years old when she met James Patterson Smith while babysitting one day. The two began dating without her parents knowledge because he was quite a bit older than her. Her parents were horrified when they found out two years later about the relationship and that Kelly planned to move in with him. James had a history of abusing women, and it unfortunately did not end with Kelly.
