Ever have one of those moments where you feel like you just can’t go on… you just can’t make it… and then it happens. Your friends show up and your inner man explodes with whatever you need: confidence, energy, hope, strength, character to make the right decision.

What is your mental motivation in serving God and becoming the man of God you are called to be?
Who is on your sidelines? Your mental sidelines.
When you need a push… who do you look to internally to push you.
In one of my last powerlifting meets I had two amazing experiences. First was after my second squat attempt (the first one I blew because I was not on the stage and had to run up there- out of breath and bottomed out) But going into my 3rd attempt I had Shawn Frankl (the strongest pound for pound powerlifter ever at the time) come up to me and give me some advice and then tell me “you got this, you could easily do 900”. His simple sideline encouragement blew my mind and made the 3rd attempt doable. It wasn’t 900, but it was the best squat I had ever done up to that time.
The Second experience was right after I got my 3 white lights on that squat at the judges table was sitting Donny Thompson, the first man ever to complete a 3000 lb total. He waved me over and said “Brother that was a great squat, way to grind it out”.
So when you don’t have tangible people around you to encourage you… what do you do? Lets read…
Hebrews
12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
12 Message Bible
1-3 Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it.
So who do you put on your sidelines when you need the push to keep going after God. Making the right decisions, making Godly choices???
My cloud of witnesses in my head are simple:
I see first my father… I would hate to ever disappoint him
My wife who has put so much faith in me
My boys who I hear yelling from the stage when I am competing…
I see so many of my friends growing up who didn’t finish the race… I hear them saying, finish for us, we messed up- don’t be like us
I see mentors from my past… Tom, Joe, Shane, Roger, Tom, Brian
One of my favorite professors Rick…
The apostle Paul… knowing all he went through… How could I quit
Jesus… He is not only watching, but he is in me!
I just watched the football hall of fame enshrinement… the men got up and thanked 100’s of people.
It made me think of this… Don’t you want others to name you in their mental sidelines?
That is the ultimate goal, not just to make it, but to make it in such a way that you become a part of the great cloud of witnesses.
