Base Camp: Holy Spirit

KEY TEXT: John 16:7 (NLT)  But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. 

BIG IDEA: While Satan is the Accuser, God’s Holy Spirit is the Advocate.

What does the Holy Spirit do?

• He CONVICTS the world of its sin. (John 16:8,9)
• He SHOWS believers the standard of God’s righteousness. (John 16:8,10)
• He CONVINCES us about the reality of judgment. (John 16:8,11)
• He GUIDES disciples into truth. (John 16:12)
• He TELLS God’s plans for the future. (John 16:13)
• He COOPERATIVES with the Father and the Son. (John 16:13-15)
• He BRINGS Christ glory by CONNECTING people to God’s word and God’s will. (John 16:14)
• He EMPOWERS disciples as witnesses for Christ. (Acts 1:8)
• He ENTERS people who turn away from their sinful condition and rely on Christ. (Acts 2:38, 10:44-45)
• He REVEALS wonderful things God has given us. (1 Cor 2:10-12)
• He INTERPRETS spiritual truths. (1 Cor 2:14)
• He FIGHTS against our sinful nature. (Galatians 5:17)
• He PRODUCES in us a transformed life. (Galatians 5:22)

About the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He is present in the world to make people aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. The Christian seeks to live under His control daily.
