Citizens and NGOs now have a stronger right to challenge decisions on environmental grounds – that’s according to Deirdre Clune. The European Parliament has voted to extend powers under the UN’s so-called Aarhus Convention. The convention gives citizens and campaign groups the right to information and to demand a review if they believe environmental standards are not being met. Those rights are now being strengthened and written into EU law. Fine Gael MEP, Deirdre Clune, has welcomed the move.
