A controversial investor-state dispute settlement system that’s part of the EU-Canada trade deal, is a fair system. That’s according to the Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly. The European Parliament today rejected a proposal to refer the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement - CETA - to the European Court of Justice. A number of MEPs had called for the referral over fears it may be incompatible with EU Treaties. Critics of the dispute mechanism say it gives multinationals the power to sue states if they’re unhappy with certain laws. However Sean Kelly says the dispute system is necessary.
