Suicide is the the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., (American Foundation For Suicide Prevention).Men die of suicide 3.53 x more than women. The rate of suicide is highest in middle age white men. The national suicide prevention lifeline answered 2 million calls last year through it's toll free hotline 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Who are the 'crisis counselors' that answer those calls? We kick off our "Mo-Vember" ( Mens Health) episodes this month with "Ian" a former suicide hotline crisis counselor. For Ian, being a crisis counselor changed his life and was not just a "job" but a passion project! We discuss positives and negatives of being a crisis counselor, tips on how to become one, using humor as self care, why crank calls to suicide hotlines are never a good idea, and how you can make your coworkers laugh by giving them chair rides!
