US Close 4 Oct 18: Stocks advance, although hampered by rising interest rates

US sharemarkets were firmer on Wednesday. Investors were encouraged by stronger economic data. Shares in General Motors rose by 2.1% after Honda said it would invest $2 billion over 12 years in GMs Cruise self-driving unit. The Dow Jones index finished up by 54 points or 0.2% to record highs. The S&P 500 index was up by 0.1% and the Nasdaq gained 25.5 points or 0.3%.
