The year 8299. It has been three decades since Ghoros the Crimson Shadow defeated humankind at the Battle of Dragonthrone. A coalition of defenders and adventurers stood bravely against him and his army but were soundly defeated. After the deaths of Pox Little, Yor Steelman and Queen Rosamund Blackforge, Ghoros took control of the capital. Those who stood against him were slaughtered and those who bent the knee were allowed to live under the thumb of the Chromatic Dragons.
Over the next three decades, Ghoros completed a series of magical rituals and has essentially ascended to god-like status, making him one of if not the most powerful being in the known realms. He installed his son, Ashheart the Merciless, as the new ruler of Usoa and as a reward for their loyalty, gifted each of his dragon lieutenants a part of Arannis to rule over, with their own army of Giants and Undead to guard; though they are all subservient to Ashheart and fly to his bidding when commanded.
Arannis has begun to lose hope, yet the resistance fights on, never wavering in the face of insurmountable odds. What remains of humanity has either gone into hiding, has been captured and sent to one of the major prison camps in Usoa, or lives a life of subjugation and servitude.
It is the first of the three where our story begins, at a rebel camp on the outskirts of the city of Dendarra on the west coast of Usoa. The resistance here is captained by Ignis, the Half-Elf Paladin who fought amongst the Defenders of Dragonthrone some 30 years ago. They, and their counterparts in Blackgate and the “headquarters” in Dragonthrone, are now the only thing that stands in the way of Ghoros and complete dominion over Arannis.
