US Close 21 Mar 17: Flat finish in the US banks and retailers weaker

US sharemarkets were largely flat on Monday with investors waiting for fresh data or information to provide direction. Over the week there will be data on housing sales and prices while a number of regional Federal Reserve presidents deliver speeches. Shares in Caterpillar rose 2.7% after the company reported a smaller decline in sales for the three months to February compared with the three months to January. The Dow Jones index fell by almost 9 points or less than 0.1% after trading in a 70 point range. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.2% while the Nasdaq was up by 0.5 points or less than 0.1%.
