The European Parliament today voted to shrink the number of MEPs in the Parliament post Brexit from seven hundred and fifty one (751) to seven hundred and five (705). They’re also proposing that twenty seven of the UK’s current 73 MEP seats be redistributed. Ireland will gain two MEP seats if the proposals are adopted by EU leaders. The new distribution of seats will only come into force after the UK has left the EU which is supposed to happen at the end of March 2019. European Parliament elections will take place in May 2019. The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness says today’s vote was both a positive and sad event.
