Morning Report 8 May 19: US-China trade tensions drag markets lower

US sharemarkets slumped on Tuesday on fears about a breakdown of trade talks between the US and China. Selling was broad-based, but trade sensitive stocks fell the most. With earnings season near an end, aggregate earnings from S&P 500 stocks are up 1.2% on a year ago, compared with a 2.3% decline estimated at the start of the season. The Dow Jones fell by 473 points or 1.8% after being down 649 points. The S&P500 index lost 1.7%. And the Nasdaq index fell by 159.5 points or 2.0%.
