European sharemarkets rose on Monday. There was relief by investors after the Italian Economy Minister Giovanni Tria predicted yields would drop when the government presents its budget for 2019. The pan-European STOXX600 rose by 0.5%. The German Dax rose by 0.2% and the UK FTSE rose by less than 0.1%. Italian shares rose by 2.3%. In London trade, shares of Rio Tinto rose by 0.2% and BHP shares fell by 0.3%.
* US sharemarkets were mixed on Monday. Investors are watching the progress of a Category 4 storm, Hurricane Florence, bearing down on the US east coast. There is also key economic data later in the week. The Dow Jones index fell by 59 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.2% and the Nasdaq gained almost 22 points or 0.3%.
* US treasury prices were little-changed on Monday ahead of new supply. On Wednesday, $23 billion in 10-year notes will be on offer and on Thursday, $15 billion of 30-year notes will be sold. Investors also await the European Central Bank rate decision on Thursday, and US inflation and activity data. US 2-year yields were flat near 2.715% and US 10-year yields fell around 1 point to 2.94%
