US Close 21 Oct 16: US stocks end lower in choppy trade

US sharemarkets fell in a volatile session on Thursday. Earnings results dominated sentiment. Verizon fell by 2.7% after revenue fell short of expectations. The S&P Telco sector was the worst performer down 1.9%. Financials continued to be the dominant story as American Express surged over 10% after strong third quarter earnings and upgraded 2016 guidance. Energy shares followed the oil price lower. The Dow Jones index ended lower by 40 points or 0.2% with the S&P 500 index down by 0.1% while the Nasdaq fell by 5 points or 0.1%.
