This week we bring you King Rice, head basketball coach at Monmouth University. From the first day I met King, I knew he was a special individual; not only did he have tremendous athletic ability, but he also had a mental maturity, which provided him with the foundation to become a natural-born leader.

From playing grammar school basketball while in 4th grade, to becoming a high school All-American and receiving a full UNC Basketball scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, King has built a life and career around the game. As the head Monmouth Basketball coach, he says his journey has just begun. With the support of his incredible family, and the community that raised him, King is determined to make an even greater impact in the years ahead.

In our conversation, King talks about his journey as a basketball player and coach, his highs and lows in life including a battle with alcohol, as well as insights into the many people in his life that made an impact on him—including coaches Tom Corgel, Roy Williams and Dean Smith, who all helped shape the coach he is today.

King and I have built a friendship that has lasted a lifetime and I am grateful to bring this episode to you, as he is one of my most favorite people in all the world. I’m happy to be able to share a small piece of his story with you.
