Ben chose songs by two of his favourite 90s bands, Hefner and Heavenly, that just happen to be next to each other in an alphabetical list of his music collection.
The Hefner song about Alan Bean, the painter and fourth man on the Moon, is from the band's final album, Dead Media, which was released in 2001. A video of Darren Hayman performing an acoustic version of the song can be found on the website for Vostok 5, a space-based art/music project he was involved with. Darren has lots of music available at Hefnet and Bandcamp.
Space Manatee, Heavenly's song about falling in love and flying into space, is from their 1997 album Operation Heavenly. Craig Finn of The Hold Steady wrote an article for the Guardian about what the song and Heavenly meant to him. Amelia Fletcher and Robert Pursey from Heavenly have a new band called The Catenary Wires.
Ben also mentions the song Neil Armstrong by Allo Darlin'.
Andrew's first choice, Destination Moon (which was not featured in the film of the same name) was written in 1951 by Marvin Fisher and Roy Alfred, and has been performed by many people, including Nat King Cole, Deana Martin and Dinah Washington. Another song called Destination Moon appears on They Might Be Giants' 1994 album John Henry.
The track we play from the 1983 album Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks is called An Ending (Ascent). The album was written, produced, and performed by Brian Eno, his brother Roger, and Daniel Lanois for the film For All Mankind, directed by Al Reinert. Brian Eno was interviewed (by The Guardian, again) for the 2009 live performances of Atmospheres and Soundtracks.
