The guest on this episode of the AP Now podcast was Tom Flynn. He joined Mary Schaeffer to discuss the critical career importance of knowing when to listen and when to speak up. Both have had some spectacular career successes by listening and really understanding what the other person is saying. By learning to be a ‘better listener’ anyone can improve their progress up the career ladder.
They also talked about self-perception and how this can affect the way a person presents in the business arena. Towards the end, Tom shared that he had gotten some inspiration in this arena from watching the Grammys the other night, specifically from what Lizzo had to say.
The flip side of this issue is knowing when to speak up. Not only knowing when you should speak up but actually doing it. Many accounts payable professionals are quite knowledgeable, have great suggestions for both process and product improvements, but yet, are reluctant to speak up.
The session concluded with a brief discussion of Tom’s new adventure on Linkedin, his TMI interviews. TMI stands for Two Minute Interview, although they do occasionally go longer.
